Novel: ‘Atonement' by Ian McEwan

Social structures, upper class façades plus the meaning of truth are just some of the themes that Ian McEwan shows in his book, ‘Atonement, ' through the different interrelationships of his characters. The character types and how they will relate to each other support us since readers arrive to a better understanding of our own lives as through the story we are compelled into the tumultuous lives of the wealthy, trusting and fraudulent. Although this could seem significantly extreme when compared with our own lives, they are basically more related than we all realise. That shows all of us that just as the laws of physics, for each and every action there is a reaction and what we do or don't perform can affect the lively engine of one other and just like the characters within a book, our personal lives are every intertwined and just how we correspond with one another determines what will happen down the road.

Without character interrelationships, there are no developments minus developments there is not any story. This kind of idea of connection is an essential element to Atonement because the main reason for the conflict is due to the unnecessary involvement of a precautious thirteen yr old (Briony) whom delves into the lives of her fellow characters in order to make a ‘story' as ‘Nothing in her life was sufficiently interesting' and if there is, ‘no one seemed to proper care. ' This is an excellent example of how a need for focus has ended in a chaotic trail of events that eventually contributes to the decline of a relatively dysfunctional family members but also the creation of a tragic love account. Atonement consists of a web of intertwining lives where one single person's actions affect the lives of many. The straightforward action of reading a letter not intended for the recipient is the trigger for the chain of events although without the personas interrelating, no chain effect would effect. The ripple effect in Atonement displays us how a small mistake can be increased from a wrong letter being delivered to the incorrect person examining it, into a man getting sentenced...
