Invisible Gentleman Analysis Essay

No matter how hard the Hidden Man tries, he can under no circumstances break in the mold of black society. This mould is crafted and placed together by white world during the book. The stereotypes and targets of a hurtful society force blacks to behave only in certain methods, never letting them act according to their own will. However, actions of black active supporters and workers seeking equality are manipulated as if they may be marionettes in strings. Through the novel the Invisible Guy encounters this kind of phenomenon and although he strives to achieve his personal identity in society, his determination is the fact it is impossible.

In the beginning of the story, the Invisible Man is definitely forced into a battle royal to black young ones in order to amuse a white audience. In this battle, he can blindfolded, so that as they boxed one another, an electric current runs through the ground and shocks them. Figuratively, metaphorically, the blindfold represents the black youths' inability to determine through the white men's face masks of goodwill. The electric power represents the shocking real truth of the white men's causes, conforming the boys towards the racial stereotype of blacks being chaotic and fierce, ferocious. The electric current sends the boys in writhing contortions, which is the first occasion where the marionette metaphor is exhibited available. Even though the Hidden Man's conversation is the reason he thinks he could be at the celebration, the battle royal then turns into the true entertainment for the white persons who are watching. Electric power is used later on in the book to demonstrate this marionette metaphor when he receives " shock therapy" in a clinic after staying injured for Liberty Paints. The wiring that are attached with him will be the " strings" of the marionette that dances on cue with the shock absorbers he gets. The doctors sit back watching him spasm from the shock saying, " they really do have rhythm. " In both the circumstances involving electricity, the Hidden Man is without control over his movements.
